Five ways to turn your photography session into art

When we capture the milestones of our family's journey, we give ourselves a chance to pause and reflect.

We reflect on those moments by turning the images captured in our photography sessions into art. It reminds us of the beauty of our family when we flip through an album, share a card, or glance at our living room wall.

One of my favourite parts of our sessions at Reflections is helping mothers create custom art that preserves their memories. From the Image Reveal, to the design of your art, to the installation of wall galleries in your home. My process helps Moms reflect on how they want to tell their family's story.

Family Spotlight

This was the Helder family’s third time visiting the Reflections Studio! Rachel and Ben had just welcomed their newest addition to the world, Hope Isabelle. This little one has 6 older siblings to look up to: Emmalyne, Isaac, Daeton, Addison, Kingston, and Ainsley.

Rachel and Ben loved the previous newborn photos we had done together. So, we chose to follow a similar style, focusing on the little details with their newborn girl and highlighting a few moments with her brothers and sisters.

We took beautiful images of Hope Isabelle’s smiles and yawns, and of affectionate snuggles from Mom and Dad. We also made images of all of her siblings cuddling with her a priority. We preserved these memories in an heirloom album they can flip through for years to come. We also created a large family portrait for their beautiful living room.

“The best way for you and your child to enjoy your portraits long-term is to print them.” — Reflections

Here are five ways you can turn beloved family photos into art.

1. Framed Portraits

Framed portraits are one of the most popular ways to turn your photographs into art, and for good reason. By framing and hanging portraits in prominent places in your home, you add to the style of the space with charming imagery. You adorn the walls with reminders of how awesome your favourite people are.

2. Albums

Another popular method to preserve family memories in print is through photo albums. You can take your favourite photos and turn them into a curated collection of moments that showcase the bond and the beauty of your loved ones.

3. Birth Announcements

When a new arrival joins your family, you'll want to share the news with every friend and family member. Birth announcements are a simple way to turn joyful moments with your newborn into a piece of art. They are designed to bring forth smiles from all who receive it.

Creating cards from your family photos is a beautiful way to share the artwork through your extended family and friends. They allow us to bring more people into our family's story. Use cards to celebrate the little moments and the big milestones.

4. Folios

Perfect for gift-giving, a custom folio feels like a shorter, personalized album but can be displayed on any flat surface without a frame.

5. Storywalls

To showcase a range of moments with your family or document your family's growth, you can build on framed portraits with a storywall gallery. Storywalls are something you can add to over long periods of time, as your family experiences more milestones.

So, how do we create this art at Reflections?

Before we get ready to create your custom art, we start with your session. I focus on your and your family by creating an open space for you to be yourselves and have some fun! Wardrobe and styling are taken care of, and you can relax in the bright open studio space. With every detail for babies covered, and beautiful wooden toys for kids to enjoy, you can truly be in the moment. I gently direct you through the shoot and take advantage of those sweet candid moments too.

The next step is your Image Reveal. One week after the session, you'll join me in the studio once again to view all your images for the first time. You may have seen a few sneak peeks before this day, but the Image Reveal is where you get the full experience of the moments we captured.

This is your family, your story. I want you to savour this experience of seeing your family through my camera lens. We choose art that tells your family story authentically and unapologetically.

With tissues nearby — for those happy tears — the images are projected onto a large screen so you can view them comfortably from the sofa. I help you pick some of your favourites, so you'll have some guidance in deciding what you want to be printed, framed or added to an album.

We'll also select the perfect materials for your new custom art. From unique frame materials, to high-quality album fabrics and styles, you'll find a design for your art that suits your home's décor. Albums and framed art even make excellent gifts for loved ones.

Albums are Canadian-made with each page designed uniquely for your family. The framed art and gallery walls are completely custom-made to fit the space in your home. Each framed print is made to size with materials that are meant to last. I even install the wall galleries in your home for you, so you won't need to worry about a DIY install.

The end result: your memories preserved in meaningful art, to remind you every day of the blessings within your family.

This is the way your memories are meant to be! I'm here to help you during each step of your photography experience so you can tell your family's story the way you want to.
