A New Mom’s 5 Biggest Worries about Newborn Photography

Those first few weeks with your newborn baby are so precious.

Those first few weeks with your newborn baby are so precious. However, this precious season comes with sleepless nights, lots of snuggle time, and full hearts. It also comes with a little bit of unpredictability. As you think about your newborn session, you might have some questions about how the session will go. If you do, you are far from alone! Many of my newborn clients come to me with these questions.

Allow me to answer the top five biggest questions I hear from moms before their newborn sessions. Did I miss yours? Please feel free to ask me here.

Top Five Questions About Newborn Photography

1. What if Baby Fusses or Cries?

This is a top question, especially from first-time mamas. Until your newborn is in your arms, it’s hard to picture what it will be like taking care of your sweet baby. So, what happens if your newborn fusses or cries during the session? Let me assure you that it’s totally normal if we need to take a break at any point in the session. That’s why I book ample time for your family so that we’re not in any sort of rush. I recommend trying to feed your baby shortly before the session so that they’re nice and sleepy. However, if the baby cries and is hungry, then we’ll break for a feeding! I absolutely love babies and have decades of experience with babies and photographing them. I can always capture the portraits you're dreaming of during the session.

2. What if I Don’t Feel Confident Postpartum?

This is another very common question I hear from mamas. What if you’re not feeling like yourself postpartum? Again, this is a very common worry, and you are not alone in feeling this way. I’ve carefully crafted my portrait process to ensure you feel beautiful and confident. My mamas receive hair and makeup services before the session. This way, you feel pampered and glowing for the session. I always pose my clients for an optimal portrait. If you have any specific concerns, I welcome you to share them with me. I can keep those concerns in mind as I photograph your family.

3. What Should I Wear?

The last thing you need is to worry about trying to find an outfit for your newborn session. You can skip the hassle of searching and shopping and instead stop by the studio to choose your dress. My client wardrobe offers dresses with colors, styles, and sizes for every postpartum body. After you select your outfits, I take care of everything from there. Your dress will be clean and ready for you on the day of your session.

4. What Should My Baby Wear?

Now that your outfit is set, now you may wonder what your baby should wear for their first official portrait. Again, I don’t want you to worry about this at all. My client wardrobe includes everything we need for your newborn’s outfit, including wraps, blankets, headbands, and more. In fact, we have everything for your entire family.

5. Will My Older Child(ren) Have Fun?

If this isn’t your first bay, maybe you’re worried about how your older children will handle the session. No matter their age, your older children will love being part of this experience. A huge benefit of a studio session is that your children will be happily occupied in the studio.  We won’t have to worry about them running off in different directions. I shared earlier how much I love babies. Well, I love all children. I’m naturally able to engage with every member of your family, so they feel involved and special. I share more about a baby-led portrait session here that applies to working with all children.
