Family Photography Through The Seasons

Capturing Each New Stage

What Season is Your Family In?

I have a question for you: If you were to give this chapter of your family’s story a title, what would it be?

Would it be about big changes? Or quiet growth? Grief? Unexpected joy?

I’ll bet most of us need a title that holds more than one of these feelings; after all, each new season can be so many things all at once, especially as a mother. It’s never just one thing. There is struggle, and joy. Beauty and chaos. As a mother of four, I’ve learned that the real magic is found right in the middle of all of it.

Visualize your life right now. can you see the magic of this season you’re in?

The Aasman family sure can. Especially now that they have fresh fall photos throughout their home to help them see the magic and the gifts of their current stage of life every day. Photography has the power to remind us of life’s goodness through every season.

Fall Family Photography Sessions:

As I’ve been running this year’s fall family photo sessions, I wanted to give you a glimpse into the beauty that this season holds for your family, and your family photography. They’ll be wrapping up in just a couple of weeks as the temperatures start to drop in November.

So much love, so much closeness, so much change since their last session, and those early fall colours popping out.

I give this a chef’s kiss! Just look…

Early fall – the dusky glow of an October sunset, the fields that are starting to yellow, and maybe even a pop of orange and red every so often …. just a taste of what’s to come!

Family Spotlight:

This is Shayna, Tom, and their children Levi, Jonah, Aubrey, and Vera.

I’ve had the privilege of capturing this special family through three different seasons of their life now:

Family photography through each new life stage:

Their Wardrobe:

You might have seen on Instagram that I recently brought in some new pieces to my studio’s fall wardrobe collection. It’s been so exciting to see you moving so confidently and naturally in these gorgeous outfits. For this year’s session with the Aasmans, we brought out the fall vibes in a subtle way with grey and beige tones, longer sleeves, some cute knit cardigans and collared shirts (fall photos don’t have to mean plaid shirts and toques!).

The Moments We Captured:

Although we met at the same location as their last photo session (Casablanca Beach in Grimsby) we really used the space in different ways. Since all four children have grown up so much since their last photo session, I loved getting to play with more standing poses.

Their varying heights naturally brought something so whimsical to the photos:

We also took solo photos with each member of the family. Although being together as a family is so important, I also think it’s really special to give every child, mother and father a chance to just see what everyone else gets to see in a candid moment – their own face, their own smile and the way their eyes look when they laugh. Let’s use your family photography as a chance to help you each find your own sense of self in this new season you’re in.

How They Preserved Their Memories:

The Aasmans decided to breathe a little of this fresh fall air into their home before the season of winter hibernation hits. They ordered a custom heirloom photo album of their favourite photos from our session. We met in an Image Reveal and I helped them select materials and and front page design.

This is one glimpse at the two page spread I’ve created for the Aasman family in their new heirloom album. I love designing these works of art for my clients.

Photography Through Your Family’s Seasons:

Shooting outside throughout the summer and fall, I’ve gotten to see the landscape change in this setting from week to week as fall leans in closer with each passing day. Witnessing this gradual change in the sunlight, the trees and the feeling of the air feels sacred; it feels much like the way I get to watch your children change from session to session. They grow taller, they change their haircuts, they learn to walk, talk and they move from a Paw Patrol obsession to a superhero-craze.

I love being your family’s memory keeper.

As much as this change can feel scary, I actually think we’re better at handling it than we think we are. I think we can handle change as naturally as the seasons do, if we can simply let the trees teach us how to let go; let the winter snow teach us how to rest; let the spring flowers remind us that we can always find new life; and let the summer sunshine teach us how to be boldly joyful.

Photography can help us move through these seasonal transitions with more ease by helping us preserve the right-now.

When we know this stage of life is safely preserved in wall art and photo albums, we can create a story that honours our past, and celebrates exactly how we are right now – in our beauty and our chaos.

About This Beautiful Family

Meet Shayna, Tom, and their children Levi, Jonah, Aubrey, and Vera. It was so wonderful to catch up this fall at their photography session – I can’t believe how quickly their children are growing up! It’s been such a pleasure being their family’s memory keeper through three different family sessions in 2019, 2020, and now 2021.

Client Testimonial

“It was an awesome experience. Everything was so natural and she made everyone feel comfortable and we could just be ourselves.

My husband, kids and I had a fabulous time with her. I would definitely work with Karen again! She is amazing at what she does!

Thanks so much for such a great experience once again. And especially thanks for being so amazing with my kids and capturing all their craziness. So neat to see how much they’ve grown over this past year.” - Shayna Aasman
