What Happens if Your Newborn Doesn't Sleep During the Session

There is so much to do and prepare when you’re expecting a baby.

I never want you to stress about your upcoming newborn photoshoot. I’m always happy to answer any of your questions. Please know that as an experienced newborn photographer and a mom of four, I’ve seen it all. It’s extremely rare for a newborn portrait session not to go well. It’s actually challenging for me to think of a recent one that didn’t go well. 

A very common question that expecting mamas ask me is, “What happens if my baby doesn’t sleep during the session?” I’d love to answer this specific question and more so you won’t have to worry about anything with my full-service process.

What Happens if Your Newborn Doesn’t Sleep During the Session

It's perfectly fine if your baby doesn't sleep during your photoshoot. The goal is for baby to be comfortable and relaxed, not necessarily asleep. There are two things that will help ensure your sweet baby is content during the photoshoot. The first is to try and feed your baby right before. My mamas receive professional hair and makeup for their newborn portrait sessions. You can feed your baby right after we complete that. The second is to take really good care of mom. If I can help mom feel relaxed and pampered, your baby will feel relaxed too.

So, what happens if your baby isn't calm and relaxed? There’s no need to stress or panic. You are my ONLY clients that day, and we’re not in any sort of rush. We have time to help soothe baby. As I said before, I am an experienced photographer AND a mom of four! I have a few tricks and ideas that we can try. It’s very rare that we can’t settle your baby. Your baby’s safety and comfort are my top priorities, and in the event that it’s just not going to work today, we can reschedule.

I don’t just show up, snap a few photos, and leave. My full-service experience is crafted around you and your family. From our first phone call to delivering your final portrait artwork, I put care and attention into every detail. As I mentioned before, I only schedule one session per day. That’s it. 

With one session per day, I’m able to fully dedicate myself to your family. We’re not in any rush or hurry while we document your family’s portraits. Newborn photoshoots typically take two hours but can sometimes be a little shorter or a little longer. So, if something comes up during it, like your baby not going to sleep right away, we can figure it out together.
