What if Your Partner Doesn't Want To Take Maternity Photos

Pregnancy is just the first chapter in your baby’s life.

I like to think of your baby’s first year as 4 chapters: maternity, newborn, six months, and one year. Each chapter has more milestones and precious moments inside.

Your partner has an important role in your child’s story, so, of course, we’d love for them to be part of your maternity photo session.

But, sometimes, they don’t want to.

It’s not that they don’t love you or the baby. Maybe they’ve had a bad experience before or think it’ll take too much time. Perhaps they worry about how they’ll look in front of the camera or worse, fear they’ll look dumb.

I have four things you can do if your partner doesn’t want to take maternity photos with you. And I’ll share what we do if they simply don’t want to be part of this session.

4 Things to Do If Your Partner Doesn’t Want to Take Maternity Photos

1. Assure Your Partner They Don’t Need to be Photogenic - So often, I hear that mom’s partner doesn’t feel comfortable in front of the camera. I totally understand and want you to assure your partner that feeling that way is perfectly normal. I actually think being photogenic is a myth. As long as your partner is excited about this baby, the images will turn out beautifully. My full-service maternity portrait sessions include wardrobe, and everything is neutral and flattering for partners.

2. Share Why It’s Important to You - I think taking a few minutes to share a few specific reasons why it’s important to you will help them understand. Write down 2-3 specific reasons to share with them. Maybe, “I want to be able to share these images with the baby someday.” Or, “These images are part of our family’s story, and I’d love for you to be part of them.” Write down anything that comes to mind.

3. Share Examples of My Work - Maybe your partner needs a visual of what this will look like. You can show examples of my work on my portfolio page and my Instagram so they can see lots of samples of families. My families come in all shapes and sizes, so your partner is sure to see that it’s about looking perfect, it’s about spending quality time together.

4. Have Them Join the Initial Call - If possible, have your partner join in for our initial phone call. They can hear directly from me and ask any questions that they might have about the session. I can walk through what to expect before, during, and after the session so they have a full understanding of what to expect. Perhaps that will help them overcome any fears or objections and realize that they do want to be part of this amazing experience.
