Questions to Ask Your Newborn Photographer and Why You Should Ask Them

1. What is Your Experience and Training?

While there isn’t a universally accepted form of training (i.e. Newborn photographer degree) the answer to this question will give you insight into how long they’ve been in photography and how often they are engaging in training. If the photographer is continually investing in newborn photography training, you can feel comfortable that they take the craft seriously. I offer more insight into this on this blog.

2. How Do You Keep Baby Safe and Comfortable?

To some, this may seem like a no-brainer, but you want to hear her answer to this question! For example, I keep my studio nice and warm during the session, so baby is never cold. My sessions are very much baby-led so that baby is never forced into an uncomfortable pose. We very gently pose baby and go with the flow.

3. When Do We Schedule the Session

Typically, newborn portrait sessions take place during the first two weeks of baby’s life. It’s important to book your photographer early to ensure availability. That said, babies are adorable at any age, so if you need a little more time to heal or establish a nursing routine, I encourage you to take that time.

4. What If My Baby is Early or Late?

Your newborn photographer should have a plan if this happens. I’ve built out my schedule to accommodate changes such as this.

5. Can I Bring My Older Children?

Yes! Not only should you be able to bring your older children, but they should also be welcomed with open arms! I love having your entire family in the studio.

6. Can I Include My Dog?
As a dog mom myself, I understand why you want this! Dogs are part of our family too. I just ask my clients a few questions about their dog just to make sure it’s a good fit. You can read my full post here.

7. What if My Baby Doesn’t Stay Asleep?

This is a big stressor for many mamas-to-be. Please know that a trained newborn photographer should have ample time during the session to accommodate your baby. You should be able to pause and meet baby’s needs at any point during the session.

8. What if My Husband/Partner Doesn’t Like Having Their Photo Taken?

This is another common stressor. This is why it’s so important to find a photographer that you and your entire family will feel comfortable spending time with. Find a photographer that offers natural, timeless photography that focuses on your relationship more than getting the “perfect” pose. That way, your partner doesn’t have to worry about anything other than enjoying time with family.

9. What Should I Wear?

Your photographer should be able to offer wardrobe guidance and tips. Even better, choose a photographer who offers a client wardrobe. That way, you won’t have to worry about finding an outfit postpartum.

10. What if I Don’t Feel Like Myself?

Occasionally I hear this concern from a mama who isn’t sure if she even wants to be in the portraits. This is why all my sessions include hair, makeup, and wardrobe. We’ll help you feel as beautiful as you are on the day of your session.
