What to Expect During Your First Year Studio Portrait Session

Turning one is a big celebration for your entire family.

Your baby has grown so much over the past year, and your family has too. Creating a family-focused first year studio portrait session means we can document this milestone for your sweet baby and capture family portraits that you’ll be able to treasure forever.

If you’ve been thinking about first birthday photos but are curious about how it all works, I’d love to share what you can expect before, during, and after your custom first year portrait photoshoot.

Planning Your Custom First-Year Session

This post gives you a behind-the-scenes look at a first birthday portrait shoot. While I follow a similar process for each, I love crafting a personalized experience based on your wishes. During our initial consultation, I’ll ask you about what you’re hoping for from the session. From there, I can ensure you have the experience that you’re dreaming of.

Before the photoshoot, you’ll stop by the Reflections Photography Studio to select your family’s outfits.

What to Expect on the Day of Your First Year Portrait Session

Hair and Makeup for Mom - All of my full-service photography portrait sessions include hair and makeup for mom. Moms deserve to feel pampered and relaxed before we begin. This goes for your child’s first year photoshoot as well. The more relaxed and calm you feel, the more your family will too!

Wardrobe Ready and Waiting for You - Your family arrives at the studio where your outfits are clean, pressed, and waiting for you. It’s one less thing you’ll have to worry about that day.

Spend a Relaxing Afternoon with Your Family - I want the studio to feel like your home away from home with a welcoming and inviting atmosphere. Your family will be able to relax and just be themselves! We’ll capture family portraits, portraits with your children, and portraits of the birthday boy. After family portraits are done, we’ll have a lot of fun during the cake smash and bath portrait of the session.

Cake Smash Photos - Cake smashes are always so fun! I love to see baby’s reaction to their cake. I provide the cake so that you don’t have to worry about that. Some babies aren’t so sure about their cake and need coaxing, while some dig in right away. All reactions are super cute. This little guy got some help from his big sister, which resulted in some adorable images of them sharing the cake.

Bath Photos - After we get messy with our cake, it’s time for our bath photos. I’ll bring in a small portable bath into the studio with warm water for bath time! Bath time is one of those parts of our routine that we take for granted when our children are little. I love being able to capture these sweet images for mom and dad to treasure as their son grows up! Plus, you can’t beat his chubby cuteness.

Niagara First Year Portrait Photographer

The fun isn’t over yet. About a week after the portrait session, you’ll return to the Grimsby studio for your image reveal and ordering appointment. We’ll sit down together and watch each of your images. I absolutely love being able to experience the session again with my clients and seeing their reactions. After viewing the images, we’ll go through and select your favourites to create your heirloom portrait artwork.

First Year Collective clients love to create an album with images from every photoshoot and a portrait gallery wall in their home. It tells the beautiful story of your family’s growth over time. I’ll take care of all the details for you, even professionally installing your frames on the walls of your home.

If you have any questions or wish to schedule your consultation with me, please send me a message here.
