When is it Too Late for Newborn Photography

Your family has dreamed about this moment for months, and now it's finally here.

After waiting so long to meet your sweet baby, the day finally arrived. You’ve gazed in awe, soaking in all ten tiny fingers, ten tiny toes, that impossibly cute nose.

While you were busy anticipating your baby’s arrival, you might have forgotten to book a newborn portrait session. Or you waited because you weren’t sure you wanted one. No matter the reason, I’m glad you’re here. Investing in professional newborn photography is so worth it.

Let me answer the questions of when you should take newborn photos and when is it “too late” for newborn photography.

When Should You Take Newborn Photos?

Typically, I suggest clients take their newborn photos within two weeks of their birth. Those peaceful newborn features and tufts of silky soft hair are fleeting. Within two weeks of life is the ideal timeframe to capture those precious, peaceful, curled-up poses that have become so beloved. Newborns tend to sleep for longer periods, so we’re able to gently swaddle and pose them while documenting each sweet feature.

As a full-service Niagara newborn photographer, I’m booked out several months in advance and can’t always accommodate last-minute requests. But please don’t click out of this blog post yet. We have options.

3 Month Baby Photography

If you’re worried it’s too late for newborn photos, we can always schedule a 3-month baby photography session. While we may not be able to capture sweet newborn poses, there’s a lot to love about this session.

Around the three-month mark is when your baby really starts to work out some new muscles. We’ll switch out the swaddle for a fluffy blanket on the floor where they can practice holding their head up and maybe even doing some tummy time.

Even better, around the two-month mark, many babies now have a “social smile” – which means they’ve learned to smile as a way to communicate their feelings to you or respond to your own smile. This sweet boy gave us the best smiles and expressions during his session.

One of my amazing clients shares her story about choosing a 3 month baby session.

"Our experience with Karen was phenomenal. I originally booked a newborn shoot but when I told Karen I wasn’t quite ready to travel with my newborn, she let us switch to a 3 month photoshoot no questions asked. At our session, she kept our baby calm and happy and handled him with such care. The studio is stunning with a different “scene” in each corner for a great variety of photos and her wardrobe options are gorgeous. We will certainly be back for more family photos."

How We Take Care of Mom with Full-Service Photography

I understand life with a newborn changes everything; if scheduling a session within the first two weeks isn't possible, don't worry. First, I want to assure you that as a mom of four, I know sometimes, mama just needs more time to recover from birth. My full-service photography process takes care of mom to help her feel relaxed, beautiful, and confident during those first few weeks with baby by taking care of wardrobe (for the whole family), hair and makeup.

Babies are adorable at all ages, and I am still able to capture beautiful images of babies, though the style and poses may vary based on age and temperament. One benefit of waiting for a three month photo session is seeing baby’s personality shine through. The most important thing is to capture those precious moments and memories that you'll cherish for a lifetime.
